Studies on the Basal Metabolism of Korean Children

Abstract
1. The studies were undertaken to estimate the Relative Metabolic Rate and to calculate the calorie expenditures of 10 boys and S girls, ranging in age from 11 years to 14 years. The reasults were summarized as follows.
1) The daily calorie expenditures.
Boys:
11 age average daily calorie 2270 cal
12 age average daily calorie 2113 cal
13 age average daily calorie 2315 cal
Girls:
11 age average daily calorie 1875 cal.
14 age average daily calorie 2173 cal
The Relative Metabolic Rate in the standardized
exercises.

Food intake RMR 047
Physical exercises RMR 1.20
Rest RMR 0.22
Playing ball RMIR 1.63
Playing cards RMR 1.45

Walking 80 - 90 paces/min. RMR 1.42
Walking 120 -¢¥130 paces/min. RMR 2.12
Vatting 150 -¢¥160 paces/min. RMR 2.23
Running 180 paces/min. RMR 3.25
Running moderate speed 100 m./60 sec. RMR 3.83

Sweeping floors RMR 1.44
Washing clotheas. RMR 0.86
2. The children showed lower values in the Relative Metabolic Rate than adults.
3. The resting metabolism was average 23.3% higher than the basal metabolism.
4. The calories estimated as the specific dynamic action were about 12% of the dietary intake.
5. There were no individual variations in the metabolic costs of standardized exercises between toys and girls.
6. The metabolic costs of standardized exercises were increased with the body surface area.
